Back to the Future Day Party: Menu, Movie Times and a Ready-to-Play Quiz

Host six people, watch one film and finish by 10 pm. This plan gives you shopping quantities, a modest example budget and ten quiz questions with answers, plus a separately calculated afternoon schedule for the trilogy.

Invite six people, including yourself, for 18:00, serve tray-baked pizza and start the first film at 19:00. Take a break, play the quiz and finish at 22:00. Our example allocates €38 to food, drinks and a shopping buffer, assuming you already have the film and equipment. That works out at about €6.33 each; it is a planning assumption, not a verified shopping-price promise.

Back to the Future Day falls on October 21, recalling the October 21, 2015 destination in the second film. For a mixed group, the 1985 original is still the easiest starting point. Nobody needs to have seen the sequels. The menu and running order below are our own hosting ideas, not official recipes.

Set the scope before you shop

This plan feeds six adults or older teenagers. You need a TV or projector, working access to the film, six seats, an oven, two baking trays roughly 30 × 40 cm, a knife, chopping board, bowls, paper and pens. A lidded saucepan is enough for popcorn. Allow about 60–75 minutes of preparation, excluding shopping; start the baking earlier if your oven can only accommodate one tray.

Agree on audio language, subtitles and dietary requirements before buying ingredients. Test the film and sound the day before. The 18:00–22:00 evening schedule

The timing reference is Universal's 2020 US 4K release of The Ultimate Trilogy. Its listed duration for Part I is 1:55:57. Starting at 19:00 gives a calculated end time of 20:55:57, leaving 4:03 inside the two-hour slot. This is arithmetic based on release information, not our own stopwatch test. Advertising, menus and technical delays take extra time. If your player's total duration is longer, bring the start forward accordingly.

A six-person menu without specialist shopping

Tray pizza fits a casual movie night and is easy to share. The time-travel theme can come from the table, rather than recreating an exact dish from the films. Buy:

• Two pizza trays: 1.2 kg ready-to-bake pizza dough in total, 500 g tomato passata, 400 g grated cheese, three peppers (about 450 g), 250 g mushrooms and 150 g drained sweetcorn.
• Crunchy side: 1 kg cucumber and carrots combined, plus 250 g plain yogurt for a herb dip.
• Something sweet: 1 kg apples, pears or other seasonal fruit, cut into shareable pieces.
• Movie snack: 200 g popcorn kernels, about 30 ml suitable cooking oil and salt to taste.
• Drinks: 3 litres of juice or soft drinks and at least 3 litres of drinking water, topped up as needed.
• From the cupboard: herbs, pepper, salt and a little oil for the trays. Add anything you do not already own to your actual shopping total.

Divide the dough and toppings between the trays. Spread on a thin layer of tomato, add vegetables and cheese, then follow the dough's baking instructions until the base and toppings are cooked. Allow about 15 minutes for topping, plus the stated oven time; thickness and your oven matter. Cut each tray into twelve pieces: 24 pieces give four per person, alongside the vegetables, fruit and popcorn.

Make the dip and wash and cut the vegetables first, then refrigerate the dip. Cut fruit shortly before serving. Pop the corn in small batches following its packet instructions. For a vegan group, swap in suitable plant-based cheese and yogurt and check the dough. A guest avoiding gluten needs a suitable separately prepared dish; lifting toppings off regular dough is not enough. Check labels and utensils against your guests' actual needs.

The €38 example budget

These are chosen spending allowances for an example shop in Germany, not checked local prices. Film rental, new equipment, electricity and specialist substitutes are excluded. Replace the figures with your own basket in your own currency. If the total grows, ask guests to bring drinks or choose seasonal vegetables; cut purchased decorations first. An existing clock, a borrowed toy car and paper lightning bolts can suggest time travel. Costumes are optional.

The ready-to-play quiz: ten questions in twenty minutes

Play in three pairs. The reader can join a team if they have not seen the answers; otherwise they host, and the other five split into a pair and a team of three. Give one point per question and no penalties; question 4 requires both first names. Accept clear spelling variants and localized names. No phones. Allow two minutes for rules, ten for questions, six for scoring and two in reserve.

Answers were checked against Amblin's film page and the official film catalogue. The final four also reward watching the credits. Treat this as a shared recap for newcomers; adding obscure sequel questions would change the game into a contest for established fans.

If you want the whole trilogy

Use release order: I → II → III. The same 2020 edition lists 1:55:57 + 1:47:55 + 1:58:14 = 5:42:06, retaining all credits. The 2025 release announcement instead gives whole-minute figures of 115, 107 and 118; those are not the timing basis here.

The film slots total 350 minutes, including 7:54 of buffer. Add 15 minutes for arrivals, 60 for breaks, 20 for the quiz and five to finish: 450 minutes, or 7½ hours. Top the pizzas in advance and bake during dinner break. Confirm your oven can finish both trays within that window; otherwise arrange ready-made food or explicitly extend the break. The quantities cover one dinner and snacks, not two main meals. Keep extra drinking water available for the longer day.

For four guests, multiply food quantities by ⅔; for eight, use 4/3. Round packs sensibly and recalculate the budget. Returning viewers celebrating the future date specifically can substitute Part II in the short evening slot. Newcomers should begin with Part I, and the quiz remains a Part I quiz.
