Street Fighter 1987: How Two Pressure Pads Became Six Buttons
Capcom’s first Street Fighter arrived in arcades 39 years ago with a wonderfully physical idea: the machine should sense how hard you hit it. The experiment did not become the future. Its replacement did.

Modern fighting games ask players to think in neat digital choices: light, medium or heavy; punch or kick; press now or wait. The deluxe 1987 Street Fighter cabinet tried something messier. It gave each player a joystick and two broad pneumatic rubber pads. One controlled punches, the other kicks, while the force of the strike was meant to choose the attack strength.
That cabinet is often remembered as a failed curiosity. Look more closely, however, and it becomes the missing link between an arcade spectacle and the six-button grammar that later made one-on-one fighting readable, repeatable and competitive.
First, a one-day anniversary correction
Some anniversary lists place the first Street Fighter on August 31, 1987. Capcom’s own corporate history gives only August, while a more precise Capcom anniversary statement dates the arcade release to August 30, 1987. That first-party date is the safer one, so August 31 is best treated as the occasion for a slightly belated 39th-birthday investigation, not as a second invented release date.
The distinction matters because arcade releases rarely behaved like a modern global launch. Manufacture, operator sales, delivery and installation could spread across days and territories. A clean date on a calendar is useful; it should not erase the difference between Capcom’s stated release and the day a particular cabinet first appeared on a local arcade floor. The deluxe cabinet wanted to measure intent
Director Takashi Nishiyama explained the design in a detailed oral history of the original game. Capcom wanted a distinctive high-end cabinet and a way to represent the complexity of martial arts with a simple arcade stick. Pressure-sensitive controls appeared to solve both problems: players would choose punch or kick, then communicate weak, medium or strong through force rather than through three separate switches.
It was a striking promise. A harder physical blow would create a harder virtual blow. Spectators could understand the relationship without reading instructions, and the oversized crescent-shaped cabinet stood apart from rows of interchangeable control panels. Capcom worked with Atari on the sensor and cabinet engineering because, Nishiyama recalled, building that kind of mechatronic hardware was not the Japanese developer’s usual specialty.
But force is a noisy input. Players tire. Two people hit differently. Rubber, air pressure and sensors wear or drift. A dramatic strike is not necessarily a precise one. The oral history records concerns about player fatigue, maintenance and the difficulty of making the sensor behave consistently. The idea made the body part of the interface, yet that same body made the interface hard to standardize.
Six ordinary buttons made strength explicit
Capcom’s practical answer was not to abandon three attack strengths. It separated them. The regular version of the original game used three digital punch buttons and three digital kick buttons: light, medium and heavy no longer depended on how forcefully a pad happened to register the player’s hand. They became six visible, repeatable decisions.
This change looks less futuristic than a pressure sensor, but it gives the player something more valuable: a stable vocabulary. A light attack can be fast and short-ranged; a heavy one can be slower and more damaging. The game designer can tune those categories, the player can practice them, and an opponent can learn to read the choices. Physical effort became tactical intent.
The six-button layout was unusual enough that Capcom’s sales team reportedly worried it would confuse customers. Player feedback helped justify it. Years later, the developers of Street Fighter II retained the system, in part because six-button cabinets from the first game already existed. The rough solution became infrastructure.
The first game already contained the series’ DNA
Controls are only half the inheritance. Capcom’s own series retrospective notes that the 1987 game introduced Ryu and Ken as its only playable fighters, alongside opponents including Adon, Gen, Birdie and Sagat. It also contained the Hadoken, Shoryuken and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, executed with directional motions and an attack input.
Those special moves were difficult to perform consistently in the original. That difficulty is part of why Street Fighter feels like a prototype when played after its sequel. Yet the important conceptual pieces are present: distance, timing, attack strength, directional commands and the possibility that two human players can test their understanding against each other.
Street Fighter II did not merely add a larger cast. It made this vocabulary responsive enough to study. Capcom’s retrospective credits the sequel with improved play and links between normal and special moves that produced the combo system. The 1991 phenomenon was a redesign of an existing experiment, not magic appearing from nowhere.
A failed interface can leave a successful structure
The pressure-pad cabinet is a useful design lesson because the obvious conclusion—“the gimmick failed”—is incomplete. Its core question survived: how should one button family express different kinds of force? The sensor answered with analog pressure. The replacement answered with discrete categories. One was theatrical; the other was reliable enough to become a language.

It becomes valuable when the team can identify which promise mattered and which mechanism got in the way. Capcom kept the weak-medium-strong promise and replaced the unreliable measurement.
The transition also shows that standards can emerge from mundane constraints. Existing cabinets, operator expectations, maintenance and player feedback all shaped the famous layout. Design history is often written as a sequence of brilliant ideas. Here, it looks more like a negotiation between ambition and hardware.
The six-button ghost is still in the machine
Years later, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono summarized the same turning point in an interview with Wired: the first game used two large pressure-sensitive controls, and Capcom moved to six buttons after problems with the sensor. The layout remained a reference point across the series because it turns strength into an explicit, learnable choice.
That continuity does not mean every fighting game should copy it, or that pressure-sensitive controls were foolish. The original cabinet asked a genuinely exciting question about translating the body into software. Its most durable contribution came from admitting that the first answer was too unstable.
Street Fighter began by asking players to hit harder. Its real breakthrough was learning to make every strength a choice. The giant rubber pads faded; the six small buttons beside them became one of gaming’s clearest dialects.
