Beer Can Appreciation Day
Canned beer fans watch out, there's something to celebrate! Every year on 24 January, the beer can's day of honour takes place in honour of the legendary beer can. In the USA this special day is known as Beer Can Appreciation Day. And unlike some other really strange holidays, this one even has a historical significance. Do you want to know what Beer Can Appreciation Day is all about?
Okay, here's the breakup: On January 24, 1935, the very first beer cans came on sale in the USA. But not only that: We are not only talking about the first beer cans, but the first beverage cans ever! No wonder, then, that the beer can is the first of its kind to be celebrated extensively every year!
So if you are looking for an opportunity to toast with a cool beer can, today is your day - or rather the day of the beer can ;-)
Although the origins of Beer Can Appreciation Day can be found among our transatlantic friends, we Germans, as a nation of beer drinkers, are of course allowed to join in the celebrations! Although the Czechs are still ahead of the Germans with an annual beer consumption of 141 litres per capita, we have 1300 breweries and more than 5000 different beer brands. Not bad either, huh?
Surely you can't wait to celebrate the anniversary of the beer can now, right? But wait. Before you ring in the end of the day with the well-known hissing of today's honoured beer can, we would like to give you five very important and funny beer infos with which you can shine at every Beer Can Appreciation Day party.
Are you ready? Let's go!
- In Russia, beer has only been considered alcohol since 2011. Previously, it was considered a foodstuff with an alcohol content of less than 10 percent. Enviable, isn't it?
- In the Middle Ages there was no purity law. As a result, besides malt, hops, yeast and water, rush, jimsonweed, belladonna, soot and pitch could be found in beer. Little tip: do not imitate!
- Good news for the figure: the University College of London has found out in studies that the beer belly has nothing at all to do with drinking beer. Anyone with a beer belly that is too big should simply eat less.
- Do you ever get scared when your beer glass empties? Don't worry, you're not alone. Cenosillicaphobia is the technical term for your problem and describes the fear of an empty beer glass. I'm sure a good psychiatrist can help you here!
- In 1814, giant beer barrels broke in the Horse Shoe Brewery in London. As a result, 1.5 million litres of beer flowed through the city. About eight people lost their lives in the unexpected flood of beer.
Well, now do you feel well prepared to celebrate Beer Can Appreciation Day? By the way, there is another day that - especially after enjoying a few cans of beer - can be perfectly combined with the Beer Can Appreciation Day: the World Day of Hearty Laughter. The Global Belly Laugh Day coincides with the Beer Can Appreciation Day. Appropriate, in our opinion.
Another tip for real beer lovers: you don't have to wait a whole year before you can hold another festival in honour of the beer. April 23 is the official day of beer, which is already waiting to be celebrated - in cans and in bottles!
With this in mind: Have a great Beer Can Appreciation Day to you all! Let the cans hiss and hold it with the wise words of Benjamin Franklin:
„Beer is the proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
